Early Numeracy Project
Goal: Improve numeracy learning for our youngest learners. Through the Early Learning Project, four tools were created:
Assessing Early Numeracy
An end-of-Kindergarten or early Grade 1 assessment that can be used to:
- Identify children at risk in mathematics.
- Consider which children would benefit from intervention support and which need extra attention in specific skills.
- Identify areas of confusion for older primary students.

Supporting Early Numeracy
An end-of-Kindergarten or early Grade 1 assessment that can be used to:
- A tool for teaching based on the assessment.
- Provides activities for small group intervention that address specific skill needs identified in the assessment.

Whole Group Follow-up
- Provides additional instructional activities that support the assessment.
- Activities are designed for whole class participation and offer valuable support for students at all levels.

Math For Families
- Provides suggestions for ways families can support math at home.
- Activities are provided to support each of the areas identified in the assessment "Assessing Early Numeracy".

Numeracy Webcasts
Dr. Heather Kelleher, noted mathematics educator and researcher, led two interactive webcasts demonstrating the use of the K-1 mathematics screening resources on January 13 and February 22, 2005.
Close to 500 teachers at 14 sites in school districts across BC participated in the webcasts hosted by the Ministry of Education and School District 62, Sooke.
The presentations, including resources, are now available online:
