Success Stories
Parents as Literacy Supporters (PALS) Program
PALS helps family members and caregivers support their preschool- or kindergarten-aged children’s early literacy development. Each PALS session focuses on learning through play, and includes time for parents and caregivers to talk with a facilitator, and time for adults and children to learn, play and have fun together.
“I have two children in the program, and [it] definitely benefits not only parents but also children. We were first shown how to creatively encourage children to learn the alphabet by using materials we can easily reach at home to play with them. Sunny found learning the alphabet was fun…soon she knew all the alphabets through playing without any pressure and tension. Andrew was not that passionate about learning. However…with the skills I learned in PALS, he didn’t resist learning the alphabet and started to learn the spelling of his name. PALS inspires parents to support their children’s learning by combining playing with learning to make learning more fun so that [it]…can happen everywhere at any time.”
