Community Windows - Lucy Hyslop
Literacy in B.C. is undergoing a mini-revolution with communities speaking up for their needs and working together to find solutions. Listen to their voices and their important messages brought together by freelance journalist Lucy Hyslop. Lucy documented this story when 2010 Legacies Now commissioned her to meet with more than 350 learners and community literacy professionals from all corners of the province.
“Community Windows” is a series of four grass-roots video segments that record a small sample of the people Lucy interviewed. The voices have been grouped together to reflect the four themes that she found came through in most of her interviews: “Community Empowerment”; “Community Goals”; “Community Resources” and “Community Success”.

- Community Goals (WMV, 6.56MB)
- Community Resources (WMV, 5.20MB)
- Community Success (WMV, 7.52MB)
“Read and Reap” is the headline for the eight-page story Lucy wrote after she travelled across BC in the depth of winter and uncovered a new wave of community-driven optimism.
The story richly documents, through the words of the community professionals and learners, the many challenges and successes that have resulted from the Literacy Now Community program developed by 2010 Legacies Now, in partnership with the Ministry of Education.
