Joan Acosta has been an innovative, creative and outstanding adult literacy practitioner in British Columbia for 25 years. She is admired for her wisdom and as a role model and mentor to many around the world. Her continued efforts to work with countless stakeholders combined with determination to ensure that everyone has access to information that is easily understood have been remarkable.
One of her most outstanding accomplishments is the Westcoast Reader; a unique and invaluable resource to the world of literacy for adults and ESL learners. Joan’s dedication has taken her across Canada to assist other dedicated teachers in Nova Scotia in the pursuit of literacy; creating the local newspaper East Coast Reader.
Her explorations and commitment have also taken her south to Seattle, Washington to assist instructors at Bellevue Community College in developing the Northwest News dedicated to adult ESL and literacy learners in the area.
Joan first served as chair of the Literacy Materials Committee and created the first Literacy Materials Bulletin, serving as its editor for two years. She continues to strive for British Columbians to reach their full potential through workshops, conferences, and visits to local classrooms.
