Frontier College Aboriginal Summer Literacy Camps

“Children who attend The Frontier College Nisga'a Stars Literacy Camp have fun learning, engage with new peers and are excited about returning to school. The camp provides a rewarding and fun educational service to the community”.

Camp Counselor - New Aiyansh

Frontier College began sending student volunteers to Canada’s frontiers to work and teach in 1899. Today, the College actively engages and trains volunteers to serve Canadians who have low literacy levels and little or no access to educational opportunities. The literacy volunteers support children, families, and adults in high-needs areas through literacy training, workshops and conferences.

In August 2008, Frontier College operated two camps in British Columbia in New Aiyansh and Laxgalts’ap. Children and youth from the communities participated in fun activities that also helped them develop their literacy skills.  The camp counsellors were members of the community and have grown to become literacy champions.
